In other news...

I got a full time job!

Now, before you start thinking I am more wacko than you already think I am, yes I did have a job, and now that job is mine.

Confused?

Ok, lets start at the start. I have been with my employer for 3 years now, and 18 months ago I was asked to fill a role for 4 weeks whilst a lady in another department was on leave. I agreed, taking on the role as well as my usual role. 18 months later I am still filling that same role. The lady who took leave sadly had cancer and passed away late last year, which meant that the role was up for application.

I applied, and today I had an annual review, and interview, and a meeting afterwards where I was offered the role. Which opened a whole new can of worms with the fact that I go on maternity leave in 6 weeks time! Luckily, there was another applicant who was more than willing to take on the role for 12 months.

Best thing about this, is I was previously employed part time, but this new role is fulltime, and at a slightly higher pay - meaning my maternity leave is paid at full time and higher pay! WooHoo!

Early Mark

I am taking an early mark this week, I am off to Melbourne to watch my husband graduate from his something-or-other-degree-about-trains (Yes, I tuned out more than once when he explained it to me, only tuning in at the points where nights away and career promotion were discussed...bad wife!)

Thanks to Mr Brumby, we are staying at the Savoy in Melbourne for the night. I have always thought about staying here, as it is extreamly close to the train station and the shops, but never got around to it.

Should be a goo night away. I got extra lucky, as I have taken today and tomorrow off working, forgetting that it was a long weekend! Thanks Queenie!

And on that note, have a fantastic weekend.

International Food Day

A few weeks back at work we held a Taste of Harmony International Food Lunch.

This is the second year we have done this, with great success! Last year most of the office took part, and we had enough food to feed a small army. We seriously did not have to bring lunch for a week!!! This year it was a smaller group, and we learnt to only bring small portions.

Now, knowing what kind of cook I am (a crappy one on a good day), I struggled to think of something to bring. And then, like a lightening bolt, it hit me.
IKEA MEATBALLS!

Needless to say, my office was as impressed with them as I am!

Thankful 9: Employment

Image from Flickr

This year saw a large number of people be made redundant, as factories struggled to continue business during the GFC. This hit home with me, as my former employer was force to close down their large family business after 70 years. It left 95 people out of a job, and without termination pay. That could have been me.

So, I am thankful for still being employed, and looking like being employed for a number of years (I work for the government). Only once have I been unemployed, when I was 19, and it was the worst 6 weeks of my life. I relied on my parents to get me through (I was still at uni and living at home), and very thankful that they helped me out at such a time. I hope to never know the pain of having to tell my family that I no longer have a job to go to, and think about how it will affect our lives.

Thankful 6: Holidays

From Flickr

As I mentioned a few days back, my work is flat out. I am covering two roles whilst a co-worker is off on sick-leave. Which means I am super busy, slightly stressed, and generally running around like a mad woman.

Which means I am looking forward to my holidays between Christmas and New Years with such delight I previously reserved for discovering that Prada is having a sale. It is only 9 days off, but it will be great. We're going to the sister in-laws for Christmas Day, I have who is visiting family, and we have plans to go shopping, I plan to do some serious work around this place, and I plan to do my favourite activity: SLEEP!

As I don't have children, and a lot of my co-workers do, I chose to take holidays in March, and allow them to spend the school holidays with their families. Plus I like the quiet time at work :D

Pulling on my cranky pants

i love my job. i love my job. i love my job.

Surely if I say it enough times, it will come true.

To explain, I work in a small company, where there are 15 office staff in my area. Generally there is only one person in each area, maybe 2, but they have different roles. So when one person goes on leave, your role is left empty until you return. The only exception to this is reception, where the rest of us have to take turns going and filling in out the front.

So, our revenue admin lady is on leave for 6 weeks, and it was agreed that I would cover the role. I was not informed of this until it had been decided. So I have to cover this ladies 40 hour role. Thats cool.

But I still have to cover my own 32 hours role. In 32 hours. So I get to cram 72 hours into 32. Awesome.

Second week in I am not doing so well. I like the man who works in revenue, but he is very different to my boss, who lets me go about things in a manner which suits myself, as long as the work gets done, she doesnt care how I do it, in what order I structure my day. Basically I have free rein of my schedule. This man expects me to not do any finance work (my usual work), and do things his way, right down to the very last detail of how to fold a letter.

Yes, how to fold an letter to put in an envelope

Thats not all. Simple instructions take half an hour for him to explain, as he goes through every detail in such extreme detail. Now, not to toot my own trumpet, but I am reasonably smart. I know how to use a computer, I know how to use our system,  and I know how to fold a letter!

I love my job
